CYRUS OVERBECK
In the artistic tradition of Rolf Hochhuth, who in 1963 with his play 'The Deputy' set a pan-German impulse on how to deal with the Holocaust, Cyrus Overbeck stands. Like Hochhuth, Overbeck's social sculptures currently trigger societal discussions that are opinion-forming in dealing with rising anti-Semitism, nationalism, homophobia, inclusion hostility, right-wing extremism, and neo-Nazi currents. In the nexus of figurations of politically responsible and state-supporting officeholders, Overbeck – always respectful but also highly provocative – unwaveringly explores the responsibility of each individual within their means to contribute to the preservation of the liberal democratic Federal Republic of Germany. For his artistic commitment, Overbeck often receives not only applause but also scorn, derision, and hatred. Nevertheless, the artist Overbeck resolutely pursues his path, similar to Wolfgang Mattheuer with his 'Century Step' or Jörg Immendorff with his 'Café Deutschland', ahead of his time. Like Martin Kippenberger with his divinatory work 'I can't see a swastika for the life of me', Overbeck, like a Deus Ex Machina, views society from above. He uncompromisingly illuminates societal grievances and fulfills the task of art in a unique way to reveal the hidden. He follows his motto to place art where it is not expected, such as in churches and courtrooms.
